Han's original twelve-parsec boast is kind of screwy by itself. I've wondered how a fast ship can optimize distance traveled, but it's never mentioned again.

Maybe it's not a race. Maybe the Kessel run is a maneuver (perhaps even a smuggling trick) that's easier to perform over shorter distances. Oh, maybe a jettison and recovery of cargo! But obviously, wild speculation.
