I know this post is 17 years old, but THANK YOU so much for making it. It's linked on the kosmemophobia subreddit and I've never seen the way I feel articulated so well. Even down to the Final Fantasy thing! I could only play X on a really crappy old TV where I couldn't see detail.
I've gotten better about it by trying to desensitize myself by googling various items, looking at customer reviews, and trying to understand their appeal (I will never get it, probably). I'm at a point where I can deal with a smartwatch, and I'm mostly okay with velvet/cloth chokers. Not metal, never metal. Never ever ever ever metal.
Also, I'm almost 36 and I've never had an IRL relationship. I cannot lie, kosmemophobia played a role in that. I almost had sex ONCE but she had on jewelry and I just couldn't do it. (There were other factors, but that was a big one). Also, I'm fortunate that my parents don't wear it and that my therapist doesn't wear it. I actually had to stop seeing one therapist. Oof.
Anyway, I wish I'd seen this post in 2004 when you first wrote it, because that would have saved me many many years of feeling like a weirdo and not being able to explain my revulsion/nausea.
