Ugh. I tried to come up with a better way to sum up this horrid collection of circumstances, but that was the best I could do. On second thought, 'horrid collection of circumstances' might be the best.
In regards to the idea of Ben examining the computer, I don't think voiding the warranty at this point would be much of an issue, as the company seems to have voided the warranty for you... I don't suppose there are 'lemon laws' for computers, as there are for cars?
In regards to the puzzle veteran (who doesn't sound like much of a veteran), have you considered posting the email you got from him to the Wikipedia discussion page (with appropriate response), thereby returning this Wikipedia issue to Wikipedia?
