Indeed, what I was taught was a simple rule: White is the absence of color, but the presence of all light. Black is the presence of all color, but the absence of light.
As for the puzzle itself, I am eager to solve it. Unfortunately, school mandates that I wait until Friday or the weekend to do it. Sigh. Stupid PhD, taking up all my free time when I wanna solve puzzles. Just once, I'd wanted to be first on one of your puzzles. Next time, perhaps.
